2011 Tax Notice FAQs

May 27, 2011 By NBraithwaite

What do the column amounts refer to on my notice?
Properties that are registered as ‘Class 01 Residential’ may qualify for a Home Owner Grant (HOG). Column ‘A’ is the amount payable without any grant applied; Column ‘B’ is the amount payable with the Basic HOG claimed; and Column ‘C’ is the amount payable if both the Basic and Additional HOG are claimed.

Why didn’t I receive a tax notice in my name?
The taxation system only allowed one name to be included on each tax notice. This will be corrected for next year.

How can I pay my taxes?
Most banks are set up for online bill payments. Unfortunately, most banks will not accept payment at the bank. Payment can also be made by cheque, money order or debit. Credit cards are not accepted.

What is my account number for paying online?
Most financial institutes will request the last eight digits of the folio number listed on the tax notice.

Can my mortgage holder still pay my taxes on my behalf?
Mortgage holder interests that were previously registered with the Province were not transferred with the roll. Contact your mortgage holder to notify them that taxes are now to be paid to the Municipality. You will also need to let them know if you qualify for the Home Owner Grant, fill it out and send it in before July 4, 2011.

Can I claim the Home Owner Grant (HOG)?
In order to qualify for the HOG you must:

  • Be an owner listed on title;
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • Live in the residence as your primary home;

I am over 65 years old; can I claim the Additional Home Owner Grant?
You must qualify for the Basic HOG in order to qualify for the AHOG.

I have a home in Sun Peaks and live there part of the year. Can I claim the HOG?
You can claim the HOG on the home that you live in as your usual residence. The address you list on your taxes or driver license would be considered your ‘usual’ residence.

If you have not received your tax notice by June 17th, please contact our office.
