Sun Peaks celebrates the municipality’s official opening of the outdoor NHL-sized skating rink as it enhances outdoor recreation activities in the community.
The opening of the outdoor refrigerated skating facility will provide further opportunities for the community and visitors to the region. The new rink is located
adjacent to the Sports Centre within easy walking distance of the Sun Peaks Village. The ice rink is already in use with the refrigeration system scheduled to be operational mid-February, extending the season and the reliability of skating at Sun Peaks.
MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson Terry Lake was on hand for the puck drop marking the official opening of the outdoor rink. The Province of British Columbia contributed $842,000 to the new rink, including $400,000 in community recreation funding and $442,000 in Resort Municipality Initiative support.
Mayor Al Raine thanked the Province for their contribution and Sun Peaks community for its $500,000, as well as the federal Canada 150 program for their $95,000 contribution. He also thanked Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust and Area P of the TNRD for their grant contributions of $50,000 each. This project took real team work and the support of all levels of government is truly appreciated.
This investment has benefitted Sun Peaks by creating jobs, strengthening and diversifying the economy and bringing the community together.
