Get up, Get Out and Get Active
On National Health and Fitness Day, Saturday, June 6, 2020
To mark this year’s National Health and Fitness Day, an initiative to make Canada the Fittest Nation on Earth, Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality is hosting a virtual Photo Challenge and Contest.
National Health and Fitness Day is an initiative to make Canada the fittest nation on earth! The day, June 6th, 2020, provides an opportunity for municipalities and all citizens to celebrate and promote physical activity. The objective is to inspire Canadians to become fitter and more active which will result in reduced health care costs attributed to preventable diseases related to inactivity.
Every year, the Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality teams up with Sun Peaks Resort to celebrate and this tradition will continue this year with a Photo Challenge capturing residents enjoying the outdoors and socially distant physical activities instead of promoting group sports and activities.
To enter the challenge, post a photo of yourself taking part in the many options for safe physical activity in Sun Peaks, such as biking, hiking, or outdoor yoga, on the SPMRM’s Facebook Page or on Instagram using the hashtag #NHFD2020SunPeaks. Eight lucky winners will be randomly chosen to receive either a $25 SPR Gift Card or a weekly pass to Sun Peaks Alpine Fitness.
“On Saturday, June 6th make sure to get outside and do something,” said Nancy Greene Raine, former Olympic champion and member of the National Health and Fitness Foundation. “Jump on your bike, grab your tennis racket, or just go for a run or a nice long walk. We are lucky to live in a place where physical activity is part of our daily lives, even during COVID time. We have the space outside, let’s all enjoy it.”

About National Health and Fitness Day
After years of working with local community groups and national health promotion organizations to review ways of improving health and fitness in Canada, Senator Nancy Greene Raine saw passage of Bill S-211, the National Health and Fitness Day Act, in December 2014. The passage of the Bill creates a strong impetus towards bringing communities together every year on the first Saturday in June, to highlight the importance of Health and Fitness.
Currently hundreds of municipalities across the country from east to west to north have proclaimed the day and are planning to celebrate the day by encouraging people to Get Up, Get Out and Get Active! while following Public Health guidelines in your area.
