Council adopted the Business Licensing and Regulation Bylaw No. 0203, 2023 on November 10, 2023, which requires all businesses conducting business within municipal boundaries to purchase a business licence.

Any business that engages in or carries on a business within the municipal boundaries will require a business licence.
Yes, every person carrying on more than one business must obtain a separate licence for each business. If a person carries on their business from more than one premise in Sun Peaks, each premise will also require a business licence. However, if a business operates a bar, restaurant or other business within the same premise as part of one corporate structure, only one business licence is required. If the bar or restaurant were to be operated by lessees, each separate business requires a licence.
A Business Licence Application Form is available on the municipal website or by contacting our office. Upon receipt of the application and payment of the applicable fee, your licence will be issued.
Commercial premises operating within the Municipality will require a clean safety inspection within 60 days of application before a licence will be issued.
Yes, business licences are not transferable. A new business owner can purchase their licence at a prorated fee.
Business licences will be renewed in January each year and will expire December 31st of each year.
Yes, Business Regulation Bylaw No. 00203 requires that all properties that are made available for nightly rentals must have a business license regardless of whether they are owner, self-managed or using an agent.
Under Bylaw 00203 Business license fees for short term nightly rental are:
Studio - 2 bedroom $275
3 bedroom + $350 .
For those properties operating under a Temporary Use Permit, there is also a $1000 refundable deposit to cover the costs of attending verified complaints and violations.All revenues generated from business licence fees will be used to support business interests in the community. The bylaw stipulates that Council must spend the Business Licence revenues for activities/facilities that benefit the business community. Council will request recommendations from the Business Advisory Body before approving expenditures.
Payments can be made in person at the Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality office on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., excluding statutory holidays. Should you require assistance after hours please call the office during business hours to make arrangements.

Cheques and Bank Drafts Payable to: Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality
Cheques and bank drafts can be mailed to the Municipal Hall or drop off at the Municipal Hall. Returned cheques are be subject to a $25.00 service charge.
