Message from the Mayor - November 9, 2022

New Council Sworn In

On November 1st  your newly elected Council was officially declared at a swearing in ceremony that took place in the Great Hall at the Sun Peaks Centre.  Council is now activated and ready to go.

Council members have attended a Sun Peaks orientation session. In addition, the TNRD organized a local government workshop that reviewed legal and regulatory obligations under the Local Government Act and the Community Charter.  This all-day session also included some practical advice from two experienced local government officials.  First regular council meeting is November 15th.

Following an audit committee report in November, Municipal staff will prepare a preliminary budget for the 2023 operating year.  Following the preliminary 2023 budget, we will hold a strategic planning session to set priorities and review service options and timing.  The strategic plan priorities may lead to council amending some of the preliminary priorities.

The 2023 budget priorities will be a challenge.  We all know that inflationary pressures have dramatically increased both operating and capital costs for everyone.  In addition, Municipality infrastructure needs some capital improvements to keep water and wastewater services at a sustainable level.  We also have 2021 projects to complete, namely our new Ambulance Bay at the Health Centre, the Daycare facilities near the new school site east of P5 parking and the delayed Plaza Park at the tennis court location. Special thanks to our Municipal staff who have successfully wrestled these major projects along with all the cost increases and supply chain issues, well done!  The 2023 budget will be a tough first exercise for the new council.

We will be approving several standing and select committees this Fall.  We have several committees that will be seeking non-councillor advisors. We will be looking for one member of the public for the Business Advisory Committee, we also need an Ontario or Alberta based property owner to join the Non-Residence Committee, a committee that gives non-resident’s advice to council.  In addition, we have a directorship opening on the Sun Peaks Housing Authority as new council member Len Hrycan can no longer fill that role. We also need a new member on the Board of Variance.  If you are interested in any of these duties, please contact Mrs. Nicky Jonsson at .

Good news!!  Advanced bookings and confirmed sales throughout Sun Peaks are very strong with some winter months surpassing pre-Covid bookings.  With the superb early snow conditions, we are looking forward to a very successful winter season.

Al Raine, Mayor
