Our recruitment intake will be held once a year, starting in January of each year. We encourage anyone to apply any time of the year, but each new member must attend recruit training to participate fully as a member of fire department.

Who Can Join?

Anyone who is legally entitled to work in Canada, lives in Sun Peaks or Whitecroft, and is over 19 years of age.

Do I Need Experience To Join?

No. Sun Peaks Fire Rescue will supply every new firefighter the training required to work safely and effectively at an emergency scene.

How Do I Join?

Joining the department is easy! If you want to talk to someone before joining, our department staff can be reached at 250-578-8985 any day of the week or by emailing training@sunpeaksfirerescue.com. If you want to be sure firefighting is the right choice for you, drop by the fire hall any Tuesday evening at 6:15pm and observe our weekly Fire Practice. Everyone is welcome!

What’s Involved In The Recruitment Process?

The recruitment process is a multi-staged process designed to ensure that all volunteer firefighters receive the training necessary to keep them safe at an emergency scene.

Stage 1 (Year 1)

Stage one of the recruitment process involves recruit firefighters attending a combination of regular fire practice on Tuesday evenings from at 6:15pm to 8:30pm and two 4-day bootcamp sessions held in the spring. During this time, recruits will learn important operating procedures, safe working practices, and will be introduced and enrolled into the Exterior Firefighter Program. Upon completion of the program, recruit firefighters will be given a pager and be permitted to work at an emergency scene in limited and supervised roles.

Stage 2 (Year 2)

During this stage in the second year of volunteering, firefighters will continue to work through and complete the Interior Firefighter Program delivered over Tuesday night practices and  two 2-day bootcamps. This will involve reading, hands-on training and evaluations.

Stage 3 (Year 3)

During this stage in the third year of volunteering, firefighters will continue to work through and complete the Full-Service Firefighter Program delivered over Tuesday night practices and a 2-day bootcamp. This will involve reading, hands on training and evaluations.
