Business Licences

Any business operating in Sun Peaks requires a business licence. This includes all short-term nightly rentals (STNR).

2025 Business licence invoices will be emailed out the last week in November.
To avoid a 10% penalty, please pay by the due date of January 31st, 2025.

The invoices will be delivered by email. Please check your junk folder or email reception@sunpeaksmunicipality.ca if you don't receive your invoice.

Please note that:
The new Province of BC STNR portal and a third-party monitoring software allows us to identify any short term nightly rental that are being advertised on internet sites. Our bylaw enforcement will be issuing fines to any STNR advertising without a valid business licence or contrary to the terms of their business license. To avoid being in contravention of our bylaw, please make sure you have a valid business licence and that the location is zoned or has a valid Temporary Use Permit to allow short-term nightly rentals.

Only properties zoned for short-term nightly rental or with a Temporary Use Permit will be issued a business license for short-term nightly rental.

All Short-term nightly rentals must have a valid on mountain contact. To update or add an on mountain contact

Notice Effective May 1, 2024

The Provincial government has introduced new legislation to help municipalities further regulate short-term rentals to improve housing supply and affordability across B.C.  More information about the new legislation and upcoming changes to how short-term rentals operate can be found here.

Effective May 1, 2024, the new legislation requires short-term rental hosts to display a valid business licence number on their listing in areas where a business licence is required by the local government.  As Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality requires short-term rental hosts to have a valid business licence, you will be required by online short-term rental platforms (for example AirBnB, VRBO etc.) to display your business licence. Your business licence number is a three or four digit number however we understand that some online short-term rental platforms are requiring a specific format.  We recommend just adding zeros in front of the number.

Please contact ServiceBC if you have questions about B.C.'s new short-term rental legislation.
