Short-Term Nightly Rentals in Sun Peaks are regulated through the Zoning Bylaw, Short-Term Nightly Rental Policy and the Business License and Regular Bylaw. Additionally, in October 2023 the Province enacted the Short-Term Rental Accommodations Act . The new rules include:
- Short Term Nightly Rentals are required to register with the Province. Hosts who do not comply will have their listings taken down and have future bookings cancelled.
- Define short-term rental (STR) as accommodations provided to members of the public in a host’s property, in exchange for money, for a period of less than 90 consecutive days.
Require STR hosts to display a valid business license number on their listing
Require a STR rental platform to remove a listing if it is not compliance with a business license requirement
- Require STR rental platforms to share information about short-term listings on a monthly basis
- Require STR hosts to include a provincial registration number on their listing (effective 2025)
- Increased fines and tickets
The principal residence requirement which limits short term nightly rentals to the host’s principal residence plus one secondary suite/accessory dwelling on the same property does not apply in Sun Peaks. The 14 resort municipalities are exempt from this requirement unless they opt in. The Municipality has not opted in at this time.
