Thinking of running for office in this year’s election? 

Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality (SPMRM) is inviting potential candidates to attend an upcoming information session. The information session will take place on Tuesday July 14, 2026, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm in the Board Room of the Sun Peaks Centre 3200 Village Way.  Participants can take part in-person or   virtually via Zoom, and the link to attend the meeting virtually can be found here: https://us02web.zoom.us/s/88968037816

During the information session, SPMRM staff will provide general information about:

• What to expect before, during and after the election;
• Key election legislation and regulations;
• Important dates;
• Candidate nomination process and requirements;
• Voting and taking office;
• Responsibilities of elected officials; and
• Expected time commitment and compensation. 

Participants will also have the opportunity to take part in a question and answer session with SPMRM elected officials, who will provide advice and answer questions about the role of an elected official on council.

Candidate nomination packages are now available. For candidates running for Mayor or Councillor, nomination packages are available for download here, or paper copies may be picked up the Municipal Office at 106-3270 Village Way from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday-Friday.

The nomination period for submission of forms is from 9:00 AM September 1st to 4:00 PM September 11th. 

Dropping off nomination forms in person is preferred, as this will include a review of all documents to ensure they are filled out correctly to mitigate any potential delays in processing the nomination application. GENERAL VOTING will be open to qualified electors of Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality on:

Saturday, October 17, 2026 between the hours of 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM at the following location:

ADDITIONAL GENERAL VOTING OPPORTUNITIES will be open to qualified electors as follows: 

Registration of all electors will take place at the time of voting.

ELECTOR QUALIFICATIONS:

In order to vote an elector must be eligible either as a Resident Elector, or a Non-Resident Elector, the requirements of which are as follows:

1. Resident Elector:

• must be age 18 or older at time of registration;
• must be a Canadian citizen;
• must have been a resident of British Columbia for at least six (6) months immediately preceding the day of registration;
• be a resident of Sun Peaks on the day of registration (at time of voting); and
• must not be disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or be otherwise disqualified by law.

2. Non-Resident Elector:

• must not be entitled to register as a resident;
• must be age 18 or older at time of registration;
• must be a Canadian citizen;
• must have been a resident of British Columbia for at least six (6) months immediately preceding the day of registration;
• must be a registered owner of real property in the Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality, either as joint tenants or tenants in common for at least 30 days immediately preceding the day of registration;
• must not be disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or be otherwise disqualified by law.

In addition, for non resident property electors: 

• The only persons who are registered owners of the property, either as joint tenants or tenants in common, are individuals who are not holding the property in trust for a corporation or another trust.
• If more than one person is registered owner of the property, only one of those individuals may, with the written consent of the majority of the owners, register as a non resident property elector.

Voter Proof of Identity and Residence

All Electors (Resident and Non-Resident) will be required to produce two (2) documents, at least one (1) of which must contain the applicant’s signature, providing evidence of their identity and place of residency.  For example, any two (2) of the following will be acceptable:

• a BC drivers license;
• a BC identification card issued by the motor vehicle office;
• an owner's certificate of insurance and vehicle license issued by ICBC;
• a BC care card or gold care card;
• a Social Insurance card;
• a citizenship card issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada;
• a real property tax notice;
• a utility bill.

Non-Resident Property Electors must also provide proof of ownership of property (i.e. state of title certificate, registered agreement for sale, latest property tax notice, or latest property assessment notice) and written consent of a majority of the property owners if there is more than one owner (forms available at www.sunpeaksmunicipality.ca ) that they are entitled to register the jointly owned property.  The person voting must sign the consent form. No one can be registered to vote on behalf of a property that is owned or partially owned by a corporation.

REQUESTING A MAIL BALLOT PACKAGE:

1. Requests can be submitted in person, by mail, fax or email to the Chief Election Officer after September 30, 2026. It is the responsibility of the elector to ensure mail ballot packages are returned to the Chief Election Officer by the close of voting on October 17, 2026. 
2. Requests must contain the following, printed information:

• Full name & Mailing address 
• Street address or Legal Description (if a non-resident property elector)
• Method by which you wish to receive your mail ballot package:
  • Pick up at the Sun Peaks Municipal office, OR
  • Regular letter mail through Canada Post to your mailing address, OR
  • Regular letter mail through Canada Post to an alternate address that you provide when requesting your mail ballot package. 

Please note: packages will not be mailed out after 4:00 pm on October 15, 2026 and must be picked up.

ANSWERS TO COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

• No elector may vote more than once regardless of the number of properties owned;
• It is not necessary to be a property owner to register and vote as a Resident Elector;
• There is no restriction to the number of Resident Electors entitled to register and vote per household;
• Corporations or businesses are not entitled to register and vote.

Elections BC is responsible for advertising rules, campaign financing rules, registration of elector organizations (parties), and third party advertising sponsor registration.

If you live within Sun Peaks' municipal boundaries, you are a resident elector. To qualify you must:

• be 18 years of age or older on general voting day; and
• be a Canadian citizen; and
• be a resident of British Columbia for at least six (6) months immediately before the day of registration; and
• be a resident of Sun Peaks; and
• are not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election and not otherwise disqualified by law.

If you own property within Sun Peaks but live outside the municipal boundaries, you are a non-resident elector. To qualify you must:

• not be entitled to register as a resident elector;
• be 18 years of age or older on general voting day; and
• be a Canadian citizen; and
• be a resident of British Columbia for at least six (6) months immediately before the day of registration; and
• be a registered owner of real property within the municipality at least thirty (30) days immediately before the day of registration; and
• the only persons who are registered owners of the property, either as joint tenants or tenants in common, are individuals who are not holding the property in trust for a corporation or another trust; and
• not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election and not otherwise disqualified bylaw; and
• if there is more than one registered owner of the property, only one of those individuals may, with the written consent of the majority of the owners, register as a non-resident property elector.

Proof of Ownership of the Property Is Required

• Land Title Office Title Search
• Property Tax Notice
• BC Property Assessment Notice

Qualified electors are required to produce two pieces of identification to prove both residency and identity (at least one must provide a signature).

Acceptable forms of identification include:

• BC Driver’s Licence
• Identification Card issued by the government of BC or Canada
• Photo BC Services Card
• Non-photo BC Services Card
• A document issued by the government of Canada that certifies registration under the Indian Act
• A citizenship card issued by Métis Nation British Columbia
• Vehicle insurance papers
• BC Care Card
• Provincial Social Assistance FORM SDES8
• Social Insurance Number
• Citizenship Card issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada
• Property Tax Notice
• Credit card or debit card
• Utility bill such as coaxial cable services, electricity, gas, telephone services, water, or public utilities 

If an elector does not have two pieces of identification, they may produce at least 2 documents that provide evidence of the applicant's identity, at least one of which must contain the applicant's signature, and make a solemn declaration as to the applicant's place of residence.

The municipality holds two [2] Advance Voting Opportunities. 

The required Advance Voting Day will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Sun Peaks Centre 3200 Village Way, Sun Peaks, BC

The second Advanced Voting Opportunity will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m at #106-3270 Village Way, Sun Peaks, BC

General Voting Day will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Sun Peaks Centre - 3200 Village Way, Sun Peaks, BC.

Mail ballot voting is available for all electors.

You are allowed to vote if you are:

• a resident elector (ie. you live in Sun Peaks ), OR
• a non-resident property elector (ie. you live elsewhere in BC but own property in Sun Peaks)

• 18 years of age or older on general voting day;
• Canadian citizen;
• a resident of BC for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration;
  resident on the day of registration OR registered owner of real property in the municipality for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration; and
• not be disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or assent voting and not otherwise disqualified by law.

Resident electors must produce 2 pieces of identification (at least one with a signature). Picture identification is not necessary. The identification must prove both residency and identity.

Non-resident property electors must produce 2 pieces of identification (at least one with a signature) to prove identity, proof that they are entitled to register in relation to the property, and, if there is more than one owner of the property, written consent from a majority of the registered owners stating that the elector is an owner of the property, and is designated as the Non-Resident (Property) Elector for that property.

You must register at the time of filling in your ballot.

A person wishing to vote by mail can request a mail ballot in person, or by filing out the mail ballot application form and returning it by mail, fax, or email (elections@sunpeaksmunicipality.ca) to the Chief Election Officer after September 30, 2026. Packages will be mailed out beginning on October 7, 2026 the first day of advanced voting. Please note, packages will not be mailed out after 4:00pm on October 15, 2026 and must be picked up.
