What is FireSmart?
FireSmart is a proven, practical approach to protecting homes, communities, and critical infrastructure from wildfire. Rooted in science and backed by decades of success, FireSmart empowers First Nations, Individuals, Local Governments, Fire Departments, and Landscape Professionals to take proactive steps that reduce wildfire risk and build long-term resilience. At the core of FireSmart is the understanding of the Home Ignition Zone where embers, radiant heat, and direct flame contact pose the greatest threat. By reducing fuel loads, removing ladder fuels, and breaking up fuel continuity around structures and throughout communities, we can significantly increase our ability to withstand wildfire and recover faster. FireSmart is not just a set of actions, it’s a shared responsibility and a pathway to safer, stronger communities.
FireSmart is founded on seven disciplines that approach wildfire preparedness from multiple angles. These are: legislation and planning, education, development considerations, vegetation management, emergency planning, training, and inter-agency cooperation.
