On Thursday, April 29th, a wildfire was reported less than 3km from the Municipal boundary. The BC Wildfire Service responded, and the fire was considered "Being Held" later that evening. By Friday evening, the fire was considered “Under Control”. This fire should be a reminder to everyone that we live in an area that is at risk of wildfire. Even though there’s still snow on much of the ground in Sun Peaks, it is quickly melting away with the warm weather and we will soon have similar conditions found just down the road.
Whether you live in a Strata or a Single Family/Duplex dwelling, everyone can work to protect our community by FireSmarting their property or asking their Strata to work at becoming FireSmart. Upon request, Local FireSmart representatives can come out to your property or Strata for FREE to carry out a wildfire hazard assessment. To organize an assessment, please email info@sunpeaksfirerescue.com and for more information about the FireSmart program, please visit https://firesmartbc.ca/.
Remember, if you see a wildfire, call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 from your cell phone to report it.
