Construction Begins on New Homes for Workers and Families in Sun Peaks

SUN PEAKS — Construction is now underway on a new 110-unit rental housing project at 1180 Sun Peaks Road, marking a major milestone for the community. Once complete, this will be the first residential rental building of its kind in Sun Peaks, providing long-term homes for local workers and families who want to live and stay in the community.

The project is a partnership between the Sun Peaks Housing Authority (SPHA), the Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality (SPMRM), and the Province of British Columbia through BC Housing. This marks the first development for SPHA, which will own and operate the building once complete.

“These new homes will give more workers and families the opportunity to live in Sun Peaks, closer to their jobs and communities they love,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “By investing in housing people can access, we are helping communities grow and thrive. This project is a great example of what we can achieve when we work together to meet people’s needs.”

SPMRM contributed the land valued at $6.4 million and the Province, through BC Builds at BC Housing, is providing an approximately $11.1 million grant and $37.1 million in low-cost repayable financing.

“This project is a turning point for our community,” said Rob O’Toole, Mayor of Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality. “Access to housing has been one of the biggest challenges for residents and businesses. By working together through SPHA and BC Builds, we’re creating real, lasting solutions for the people who make Sun Peaks thrive.”

The building will provide a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, designed to meet the needs of a wide range of residents—from year-round staff and young professionals to families building their lives in Sun Peaks. At least 20% of the homes will be rented at below-market rates, helping to improve access to housing and retain local workers. Rent levels for the project have not yet been determined and will be finalized closer to completion.

The five-storey, wood-frame building will include shared indoor and outdoor amenity spaces, parking, and convenient access to the valley trail.

“Delivering this project marks an exciting beginning for the Sun Peaks Housing Authority,” said Len Hrycan, Chair of SPHA. “Our mission is to provide and manage housing options for all those who seek to live in and be part of the Sun Peaks community. This first development is a meaningful step toward that vision.”

Construction began in September 2025 and is anticipated to be complete in 2027. A Celebration of Construction will be held on November 10, 2025, bringing together project partners and local officials to mark this important milestone.

BC Builds is part of B.C.͛s $19-billion housing investment. Since it launched, more than 3,900 homes are underway, bringing more housing options to people with middle incomes in the province.
