Sun Peaks Opens New Plaza Park

Plaza Park

Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality is excited to announce the opening of the Sun Peaks Plaza, a public open space park located near the Sun Peaks Centre.

The Plaza features a natural concert amphitheatre, an inclusive and accessible children’s adventure playground, and picnic and resting area along with improved pedestrian walkways and short-term parking stalls.

The new Plaza connects the Sun Peaks Centre and its Secwepemc cultural features, and the nearby Shuswap Medicine trail with the Sun Peaks Village.

The Plaza is located at the site of the old tennis courts. As part of this project, two new tennis courts and two pickleball courts were built near the proposed future school site.

An amazing state-of-the-art adventure playground designed by Parkworks encourages younger participants to explore and challenge themselves. The park features an agility course with ropes, climbing and balancing elements, spinners, a triple-wide hill slide as well as rope and disc swings and other exciting features.

The $1.65 million project was funded with a Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport grant of $898,241 as well as a Tourism Sun Peaks contribution of $350,000 for playground equipment, and individual donations of $198,876 and Municipal support of $190,000 as well as a $10,000 donation from Sun Peaks Rotary and an Adaptive Sports Sun Peaks contribution of $2,000.  The land for the park was donated to the Municipality by Sun Peaks Resort LLP.

Sun Peaks Resort Municipality engaged a leading local landscape architect firm, Van der Zalm Associates Inc. to design the new community attraction utilizing the surrounding mountain landscape as inspiration.

“Investments in tourism infrastructure projects like Sun Peaks Plaza are good for visitors, good for communities and good for the economy,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “The tourism investments we’ve made in regions throughout the province are creating a more vibrant British Columbia for everyone and the Sun Peaks Plaza is an incredible example of how spaces like this create welcoming, accessible, and fun experiences for residents and tourists.”

Mayor Al Raine envisions that “This Plaza will become an important people place in Sun Peaks where residents and tourist will gather, play and relax during visits to the village. We already have one of the best alpine villages anywhere and this project adds a new visitor attraction at Sun Peaks.”

Arlene Schieven, President and CEO of Tourism Sun Peaks, notes that “an inclusive playground was a much-needed amenity for both our visitors and our community. We were pleased to be able to provide funding to realize the vision and are excited to add this new amenity to our year-round product offerings”.
