Message from the Mayor

It’s hard to believe August is already here. Summer is half over. Still, we have plenty of time to create some great summer memories.

Your municipal Council and staff have been hard at work on a few projects. The new middle-income housing development in the west end of Sun Peaks is under development. This project will be the foundation of the Sun Peaks Housing Authority’s vision to build and manage a wide range of long-term housing options for the residents of Sun Peaks.

The new water pipeline that will connect our surface water reservoir to the water treatment facility is also moving along. This project wouldn’t be possible without the close collaboration of our staff and the staff of Sun Peaks Resort LLP. We are thankful to have such strong partners in the continued growth of our community.

Lastly, it has been 3 years since the last update of our Short-Term Nightly Rental Policy. We are in the midst of a review of the policy. On Thursday July 31 the municipality along with the consultant hired to provide recommendations to Council, hosted a community engagement session. Roughly 75+ people attended both in person and online. Historically this is a subject that residents are passionate about and with it, a wide range of opinions. This session was no different. I did see and hear a willingness from those in attendance to listen to each other’s views and even try to look at things through a different len. Over the next few weeks, the consultant will provide Council with the initial recommendations. At that point we will schedule another community engagement session to take a closer look at the recommendations before Council makes any updates to the policy. We expect this session to take place sometime in the Fall.
