Wildfire Update - at 3:30 PM August 23rd

Although Sun Peaks had a considerable amount of rain last night, Sun Peaks Fire Rescue and Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality continue to monitor the wildfire situation.  The Bush Creek East (K21633) wildfire currently estimated at approximately 41,000 Hectares has had no significant growth in the last 48 hours. Crews and equipment continue to make good progress on the fire. The Lower East Adams Lake (previously K21620) and the Bush Creek East (K21633) wildfires have merged and are now referred to as the Bush Creek East (K21633) fire. The fire is currently estimated at 41,000 hectares in size. The perimeter of the fire has been updated on the BC Wildfire dashboard at https://wildfiresituation.nrs.gov.bc.ca/incidents?fireYear=2023&incidentNumber=K21633. Sun Peaks Fire Rescue and Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality are in frequent communications with BC Wildfire Service (BCWFS) regarding the movement of the fire. We continue to monitor the situation and will act on any recommendation from BCWFS should conditions change, and we will continue to provide updates to the public and residents. We recognize things can change quickly, so residents should always be prepared in the event of an emergency.

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Ensure your home insurance is up-to-date and includes adequate coverage for fire damage
  • Pull together grab-and-go bags for each member of your household in case you have to leave quickly
  • Make sure your emergency plan is up to date. Review it with members of your household
  • Protect your property by completing a risk assessment in BC’s FireSmart Manual

Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality and Sun Peaks Fire Rescue are continuing to monitor several out-of-control wildfires both of which are currently not a threat to Sun Peaks at this time, but may be visible from Sun Peaks and surrounding communities. The Oliver Creek Wildfire south of Louis Creek was discovered on Thursday evening and is currently estimated at 8.3 Hectares in size with BCWFS ground personnel and air assets assigned to the fire. The East Adams Lake Wildfire on the east side of Adams Lake was discovered on July 12 and is currently estimated at 10,004 hectares in size. The Bush Creek Wildfire on the west side of Adams Lake was also discovered on July 12 and is currently estimated at 3,287 hectares in size.

There is no current wildfire threat to Sun Peaks and no action from residents is required at this time.  We will continue to keep residents informed if conditions change. For more information on the above mentioned fires, please see the following BC Wildfire Service map link: BC Wildfire Service
